We Need To Talk About Social & the Sensitive Child...
Instagram Live with clinical psychologist Dr Genevieve Von Lob
Wednesday 5th June 8.30pm
@ WeNeedToTalkAboutSocial (Instagram)
Dr Genevieve Von Lob, clinical psychologist and child, teen and parenting expert will be joining me to talk about social media, parenting and how a one size does not fit all children.
I am aware of her work as a ‘highly sensitive child’ expert. I had never heard the term before but it has helped and informed my parenting enormously. We all know some kids breeze through certain situations where other kids will struggle. See, for example sleepovers, school trips, fallings outs & failings, exams, not feeling like they belong.… so I think it’s safe to assume that Instagram & TikTok would be no different. Not all kids are going to be doing the dance routines & having fun right?
We currently have a one size fits all approach to social media and a universal age recommendation of 13 - without stopping to ask whether it is actually right for all.
I will be asking Dr Von Lob about parenting a ‘high sensation’ or ‘highly sensitive’ child.
We will talk about what is going on developmentally with children in their teens and the impact she thinks social media can have at that age.
We also aim to talk about the different types of screen time - this isn’t about getting rid of technology for children but we know there is a world of difference between looking at disturbing violent content & silly cat content.
I’m looking forward to hearing what advice she has for parents who worry about the impact of social media on their children. What are the pitfalls, the benefits and what would she do if she was in charge?
